Switchblade and Automatic OTF FAQ

What is a switchblade?

A switchblade knife is a type of knife with a folding blade contained in the handle which is opened automatically by a spring when a button or lever on the handle is activated. These knives are also known as automatic knives or push-button knives. There are various configurations of button actuators, blade locking mechanisms and accidental deployment safety devices incorporated in switchblades.

What is an OTF knife?

An OTF (Out-The-Front) knife is a type of pocketknife where the blade slides directly forward out of the handle with the push or slide of a button or other trigger device. OTFs are further classified into double-action or single action. A double action OTF deploys and retracts automatically with the same button or trigger. Single action OTF blades–which generally deploy with the greatest force–need to be “cocked” into place with a sliding device, often out the back of the knife, to arm them again for future deployment.

What is a spring-assisted knife?

A spring-assisted knife looks and operates almost the same as any “flipper” style knife. The familiar tab is located in the same spot and the knife actuated the same way as any “flipper”. But from there, the spring assist takes over, so that it requires very little effort–indeed, sometimes LESS effort than a fully automatic knife–to actuate and deploy the blade. There are knives available with very little spring assist and some with practically automatic operation. At Michigan Switchblades we offer fully automatic knives, spring-assisted knives, and very smoothly operating non spring-assisted “flippers”.

What is a Karambit?

The karambit, also spelled kerambit (Indonesian), is a unique and interesting knife with a long history:

  • Origin: It hails from Indonesia, specifically associated with the Minangkabau people of West Sumatra [Wikipedia: Karambit].

  • Traditional Use: Originally, it wasn’t a weapon, but a multi-purpose tool designed for agricultural tasks like harvesting crops, cutting vines, and other farm chores due to its curved blade https://karambit.com/pages/karambit-anatomy.

  • Weaponry: Over time, its effectiveness in close-quarters combat became apparent. The curved design allows for swift slashing and hooking motions, making it a formidable weapon in skilled hands. This led to the development of martial arts incorporating the karambit https://karambit.com/pages/karambit-anatomy.

  • Design: The karambit has a distinctive look:

    • Curved or hooked blade resembling a claw [Wikipedia: Karambit]
    • Ergonomic handle for a secure grip
    • Often includes a finger ring at the end of the handle for additional control https://karambit.com/pages/karambit-anatomy
  • Modern Uses: Today, karambits are still used in some martial arts but are also found in:

What is a balisong?

A balisong, also known as a butterfly knife or fan knife, is a folding knife with two handles that rotate around the tang (the unsharpened extension of the blade). Here’s a breakdown of its key characteristics:

  • Folding Mechanism: Unlike a traditional folding knife, a balisong doesn’t have a single pivot point. Its two handles can swing freely around the tang, allowing the blade to be concealed within the handles when closed.

  • Maneuvering: Balisongs are known for their impressive flipping tricks. With practice, users can adeptly open and close the knife with quick and stylish motions. However, mastering these tricks requires dedication and proper guidance to ensure safety.

  • Legality: It’s important to note that balisongs are illegal to carry or own in many places due to their potential use as weapons. Laws vary by region, so it’s crucial to check local regulations before purchasing or possessing a balisong.

  • Uses: Beyond the flashy tricks, balisongs can be practical cutting tools. Some people appreciate them for their unique folding mechanism and compact design when closed. However, their legality and potential for misuse make them a less common choice for everyday carry compared to traditional folding knives.

What is a gravity knife?

A gravity knife, like the name implies, is deployed and retracted by the force of gravity. That is, the blade slides in and out under its own weight. Usually, the knife has a pivot mechanism on one end, allowing the knife to swing open and free the blade to slide in or out.

Yes! In almost all states, including Michigan, owning, buying and selling switchblades and other automatic knives is perfectly legal. In a few states, they are prohibited, and infrequently, a city may have stricter laws than their encompassing state.

In Michigan, particularly, there are NO ILLEGAL KNIVES, and the law considers the INTENT of the person carrying the knife. Consult with a lawyer if you have doubts regarding the legality at your location.

Can I carry a switchblade or OTF knife?

Yes! In Michigan, for instance, you may carry ANY knife. The only restriction is that you may not CONCEAL a “non-folding, double edged” knife (dagger). You may CARRY one though, as long as it is visible on your person.

This is our understanding of Michigan law. For actual legal advice, and information on other states, you should speak with an attorney.

When did switchblades become stigmatized, and why?

During the 1950s, newspapers and tabloids promoted the image of a new violent crime wave caused by young male delinquents with switchblade knives. This was based mostly on anecdotal evidence and exaggerated pop-culture myths about the extent to which switchblades are used in crimes.
In 1954, the first was bill submitted to the U.S. Congress banning the manufacture and sale of switchblades, beginning a wave of legal restrictions worldwide and a consequent decline in their popularity.
Since then, the tide has turned and most states have eased or eliminated restrictions on these knives.

Will a switchblade or automatic knife perform as well as a regular folding knife?

It depends. Generally, well manufactured switchblades and OTFs can be just as effective as a regular folding knife. However, the design constraints imposed by automatic operation make it a challenge to achieve the same blade lock up and rigidity as a manual folder. Modern switchblades and OTF designs have addressed these considerations and produce very rigid knives with excellent blade lock up.
